20 October – 1 November. Viha is read as the point where the monsoon begins to loosen its grip. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Viha runs from 20 October – 1 November, the sixteenth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the twenty-fifth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Rain still falls, often in short, heavy bursts, but dry spells lengthen and the wind eases.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem.
