The Maldives in Hey.
7 October – 19 October. Hey is traditionally a nakaiy of thunder and heavy showers in the afternoons, with mornings often clear and still. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Hey runs from 7 October – 19 October, the fifteenth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the twenty-fourth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Favour the morning. Afternoon storms tend to clear into vivid sunsets between 17:50 and 18:20, but they cannot be relied on. An early ceremony, a long lunch and an evening under cover is a sound shape for the day; set-up is finished before the afternoon build-up.
