The Maldives in Nora.
2 November – 14 November. Nora is traditionally a nakaiy of variable winds and patchy rain, as the south-west monsoon weakens and the north-east has not yet arrived. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Nora runs from 2 November – 14 November, the seventeenth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the twenty-sixth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Calm days grow more common.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Clear stretches grow longer and the odds of a dry sunset, between 17:50 and 18:20, improve through the fortnight. The golden half-hour is often uninterrupted. We still confirm a covered venue, but by Nora most ceremonies and dinners happen in the open as planned.
