The Maldives in Funoas.
25 June – 7 July. Funoas is traditionally read as a slight easing of the rain while the seas stay high and the wind holds from the south-west. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Funoas runs from 25 June – 7 July, the seventh of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the sixteenth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Fishermen expect rough water beyond the reef.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem.
