Hulhangu monsoon · nakaiy 17 of 27
The Maldives in Fus.
8 July – 20 July. Fus sits mid-monsoon. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Fus runs from 8 July – 20 July, the eighth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the seventeenth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. The almanac reads it as steady rather than stormy: a constant south-west wind, cloud for much of the day and showers that come and go.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so transfers and set-up are booked around the light. How we plan for rain sets out what we hold and when we decide.
Even, soft light for most of the day, which suits a daytime ceremony or a long lunch as well as an evening one. Sunset falls around six and is often gentle rather than dramatic. A covered venue is held as standard and used without regret. At four degrees north the length of the day barely changes and the golden hour is short, 30 to 40 minutes rather than sixty. We time the ceremony to it, and Golden hour in the Maldives explains how.

Questions about Fus.
What is the weather like in the Maldives during Fus?
Fus sits mid-monsoon. The almanac reads it as steady rather than stormy: a constant south-west wind, cloud for much of the day and showers that come and go. It is the eighth nakaiy of Hulhangu and falls in the second and third weeks of July. It falls in Hulhangu, the wetter south-west monsoon, which runs from April to late November.
Is 8 July – 20 July a good time for a wedding in the Maldives?
Yes, with a plan. Hulhangu gives quieter islands and more dramatic skies; the trade-off is showers, which are usually short. We hold a covered venue for the ceremony and the dinner and decide on the afternoon, with décor built to cope with wind. Even, soft light for most of the day, which suits a daytime ceremony or a long lunch as well as an evening one.
Which resorts have you worked at in Fus?
None published yet: no project on the site is dated in Fus. The calendar is the same across the country, so work from the rest of Hulhangu shows the same sky. Tell us your island and your dates and we confirm the resort's policy on outside planners within 24 hours.
How far ahead should we book for Fus?
We take bookings from one month ahead and up to two to five years ahead. Fus is in the quieter monsoon and a few months is usually enough, though popular resorts fill their event dates in any month. A proposal with a full cost breakdown follows within five days of your brief and is held for five.
