Burunu.
21 April – 3 May. Burunu is read as a stormier nakaiy: thunder in the afternoons, a freshening south-west wind and a sea that starts to swell. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Burunu runs from 21 April – 3 May, the second of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the eleventh of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Mornings are often fine.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. For a sunset ceremony, between 17:50 and 18:20, a covered venue is confirmed in advance and the call is made that afternoon.
