Two monsoons shape a year in Shaviyani. Iruvai, the north-east monsoon from late November to early April, is the dry season of clear skies and still lagoons; Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon from April to November, brings short showers, dramatic cloud and the best sunsets. Shaviyani is in the north of the country, which gets slightly less rain than Malé during Hulhangu, and Iruvai evenings here are as still as anywhere in the Maldives.
