The Maldives in Miyaheli.
30 May – 11 June. Miyaheli is traditionally read as wet and windy, and often among the roughest stretches of the year, with the south-west monsoon at full strength. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Miyaheli runs from 30 May – 11 June, the fifth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the fourteenth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Seas are high outside the atoll and showers are frequent.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Low, gentle light under cloud for much of the day, and a sunset around six that is sometimes hidden altogether. The sheltered lagoon side of an island and a covered venue are the basis of the plan; the beach is a bonus when the sky allows it.
