Maa.
3 August – 15 August. Maa means big, and the almanac reads it as the big nakaiy of Hulhangu: fair days with a strong, steady south-west wind and a lively sea. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Maa runs from 3 August – 15 August, the tenth of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the nineteenth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Rain is lighter than in June.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. Bright and breezy. Sunset falls around six and the golden half-hour is usually clear. Wind is the thing to design for: heavy bases, low florals, drapes tied off, and a dinner table on the lee side of the island. Set-up is mostly dry.
