16 August – 28 August. Fura is traditionally read as a calmer spell: the seas ease, the lagoon settles and the wind softens. It sits in Hulhangu, the south-west monsoon: wetter, quieter on the islands, and planned with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner.
Fura runs from 16 August – 28 August, the eleventh of the eighteen nakaiy of Hulhangu and the twentieth of twenty-seven. The nakaiy are the traditional Maldivian almanac, about thirteen days each and named for the stars; fishermen still read the weather by them. Showers still pass through but the days are generally fair.
Hulhangu is the wetter monsoon: a south-west wind, short showers that often pass within the hour, and a sky with more shape than in Iruvai. The islands are quieter. Planning starts with a covered venue held for the ceremony and the dinner, decided on the afternoon, and with décor anchored, low and heavy so wind is a texture, not a problem. The water clears again and evenings are often open, with sunset between 17:50 and 18:20 and a dependable golden spell before it. A sandbank dinner or a beach ceremony is realistic in Fura; we still hold a covered venue and confirm on the day.
